DakshinaChitra is a living-history museum located approximately 30 kilometers from Chennai on the East Coast Road (ECR). It is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the heritage and culture of South India.

The name "DakshinaChitra" translates to "a picture of the south," reflecting its focus on representing the diverse traditions and customs of the southern region of India.

The museum operates from 10 am to 6 pm, and on weekends, it extends its hours until 7 pm. However, please note that DakshinaChitra is closed on Tuesdays.

The entry fee for visitors is 150 rupees per person.

DakshinaChitra is known for its collection of 18 authentic historical houses, each with contextual exhibitions that provide insights into the lifestyle, art, and craftsmanship of the past. These houses were saved from demolition by their previous owners and were relocated and reconstructed at DakshinaChitra, ensuring their preservation.

The museum showcases heritage houses from four southern states: Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. This diverse collection offers a comprehensive representation of the cultural heritage of the region.
