Capturing Tamil Nadu's Heritage: DakshinaChitra Museum - Houses and Art Exhibition

DakshinaChitra is a fascinating heritage museum located on the East Coast Road (ECR), about 30 kilometers from Chennai. It is conveniently situated, with Mahabalipuram just 24 kilometers away and Pondicherry around 120 kilometers away.

The name DakshinaChitra translates to "a picture of the south" and appropriately reflects the museum's dedication to showcasing the rich heritage and culture of South India. The museum is a living-history experience, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the traditions, art, architecture, and lifestyle of the region.

Operating from 10 am to 6 pm (with extended hours until 7 pm on weekends), DakshinaChitra provides a unique opportunity to explore and learn about the diverse heritage of South India. Please note that the museum remains closed on Tuesdays.

One of the highlights of DakshinaChitra is its collection of 18 authentic historical houses, each with contextual exhibitions that offer insights into the way of life, traditions, and craftsmanship of the past. These houses were actually saved from demolition by their owners and brought to DakshinaChitra for reconstruction, ensuring their preservation and the continuation of their stories.

The collection includes heritage houses from the four southern states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, providing visitors with a comprehensive understanding of the region's cultural diversity and architectural styles.
