Thirumayam Fort: A Glimpse into History's Citadel of Strength and Splendor

The Thirumayam Fort, located in the town of Thirumayam along the Pudukkottai-Karaikudi Highway in Pudukkottai District, Tamil Nadu, India, spans across an expansive 40 acres. Its construction dates back to 1687 when it was built by Vijaya Raghunatha Sethupathi, the Raja of Ramnad. Subsequently, the fort came under the ownership of Raghunatha Raya Tondaiman, his brother-in-law.

With its rich historical background, the Thirumayam Fort played a significant role during the Polygar Wars, serving as a stronghold for rebel chieftains. Notably, it was within these walls that Oomathurai, the brother of the renowned Panchalankurichi chieftain Kattabomman, was captured. Locally, the fort is referred to as Oomayan Kottai, meaning "fort of the dumb."
