Kachaaram Waterfalls aka Kanthalloor Waterfalls

Kachaaram Waterfalls – A Hidden Gem in Kanthalloor, Kerala

If you’re looking for an offbeat and refreshing escape in Kerala, Kachaaram Waterfalls, also known as Kanthalloor Waterfalls, is the perfect hidden gem waiting to be explored. Tucked away in the peaceful village of Kanthalloor, located in the Idukki district, this scenic waterfall offers a tranquil retreat surrounded by lush greenery and cool mountain air.

A Peaceful Morning in Kanthalloor

We spent the night in Kanthalloor, a serene village known for its fruit orchards, vegetable farms, and cool climate. Often called the “Fruit Village of Kerala,” Kanthalloor is famous for growing apples, plums, peaches, and more—fruits that are rarely found in other parts of the state.

The next morning, we decided to head towards Kachaaram Waterfalls, which is situated on the road leading to Marayoor. The route itself is scenic, offering beautiful views of the rolling hills and mist-covered landscapes.

Trekking to the Waterfalls

After parking our car, we started walking towards the waterfall. There is a viewpoint on the way from where you can hear the soothing sound of water and even catch a glimpse of the falls from a distance. The trek to the base of the waterfall is around 500 meters and took about 15 minutes to complete. The path is unpaved but manageable for most visitors.

For those who prefer not to walk, trip jeeps are available and can take you closer to the waterfall.

Nature’s Refreshing Retreat

The Kachaaram Waterfall drops from a height of around 20 meters, creating a natural pool below. It's an ideal spot to relax, dip your feet, and enjoy the untouched beauty of nature. There was no entry fee during our visit, making it a great budget-friendly experience.

While the best time to visit is during the monsoon season when the waterfall is at its fullest, even during our January visit (towards the beginning of summer), the water flow was still delightful and photogenic.

Nearby Attractions

While exploring Kanthalloor, we also visited the Bhramaram View Point, which offers a distant yet spectacular view of the Kachaaram Waterfalls. We’ve also included a few stunning visuals from the Marayoor View Point, which is known for its panoramic landscapes and peaceful vibes.

Final Thoughts

If you’re planning a trip to Munnar, Marayoor, or anywhere in Idukki, adding Kachaaram Waterfalls and Kanthalloor to your itinerary is highly recommended. It’s a peaceful alternative to the more crowded tourist spots and provides a raw, unfiltered connection with nature.

Discover Kattikayam Waterfalls: A Hidden Gem Near Illikkal Kallu

When it comes to breathtaking natural beauty and serene landscapes, Kerala never disappoints. One of its hidden gems, Kattikayam Waterfalls, is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Tucked away near the famous Illikkal Kallu, this waterfall offers a perfect escape into the lap of nature.

How to Reach Kattikayam Waterfalls

Kattikayam Waterfalls is located near Moonnilavu on the way to Illikkal Kallu. To get there, you’ll come across Kattikayam Junction, also known as Thottumukku Junction. From here, take a deviation from the main road and follow the narrow path for about 800 meters to reach the paid parking area.

  • Parking Fees: ₹20 for cars, ₹10 for bikes

  • Facilities: There’s a small shop in the parking area where you can buy snacks and drinks.

The Trek to Kattikayam Waterfalls

The trek to the falls takes around 15 minutes and is filled with scenic beauty, lush greenery, and the soothing sound of flowing water. Though the path is mostly paved, be cautious as it’s quite old and lacks proper maintenance. Earlier, handrails lined the route, but now only a few poles remain.

Since the waterfall is most magnificent during monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, my visit in October rewarded me with a stunning view of cascading water. The weather had been rainy recently, making the trail a bit slippery, so wearing good trekking shoes is essential.

The Beauty of Kattikayam Waterfalls

As you approach the falls, the sound of rushing water becomes more intense, and the sight of the waterfall leaves you spellbound. The water tumbles down rocky terrain, forming a picturesque natural pool below.

  • Swimming Spot: The pool at the base of the falls is mesmerizing, but it’s important to be cautious while swimming as there are submerged rocks. There are no lifeguards, so swim at your own risk.

  • Hidden Cascade: Just below the main waterfall, there’s another cascade that can be seen from above. Unfortunately, there is no safe way to reach the bottom, so it’s best to admire it from the top.

Scenic Views and Nearby Attractions

While approaching Kattikayam from Melukavu, you can enjoy a distant view of the waterfall—a perfect spot to take some photos! The journey from Marmala Falls to Kattikayam Falls also offers mesmerizing views of Illikkal Kallu in the distance.

If you are planning a day trip, consider visiting nearby attractions:

  • Illikkal Kallu: Famous for its unique rock formation and panoramic views.

  • Marmala Aruvi Waterfalls: Another hidden gem nearby.

  • Eliyattupara Waterfalls: A serene spot to unwind.

Tips for Visiting Kattikayam Waterfalls

  • Best Time to Visit: Monsoon and post-monsoon (July to October)

  • What to Carry:

    • Comfortable trekking shoes

    • Snacks and water

    • Camera and waterproof cover

    • Basic first aid kit

  • Safety Precautions:

    • Be cautious while trekking, especially during rains.

    • Avoid swimming in deep areas due to submerged rocks.

    • No lifeguards are available, so stay safe and vigilant.

Final Thoughts

Kattikayam Waterfalls is truly a hidden paradise, offering an unforgettable experience for those willing to take the trek. The journey might be a bit challenging, but the reward at the end is worth every step. Whether you’re looking for an adventurous day out or just a peaceful escape into nature, this waterfall should definitely be on your list.

On my recent visit to Thommankuthu, I had the chance to explore the first two waterfalls and learn about the trekking options available. Join me as I take you through this adventure!

Reaching Thommankuthu Waterfalls

Thommankuthu is well-connected by road, and the nearest town, Thodupuzha, serves as the best base point. From Thodupuzha, you can hire a taxi, auto-rickshaw, or take a bus to the entrance of the waterfalls.

📍 Location: Thommankuthu, Idukki, Kerala
Distance from Thodupuzha: 20 km
🚗 Best way to reach: Private vehicle, taxi, or bus

Entry Fee & Trekking Options

Upon reaching the entrance, you’ll need to purchase an entry ticket for ₹40 per person. From here, a short trek takes you to the first waterfall, while those interested in a deeper exploration can opt for guided trekking tours.

💰 Entry Fee: ₹40 per person
🥾 Trekking Options:

The first waterfall is about 400m from the entrance, and the trek is relatively easy, with well-defined paths. Along the way, you’ll pass wooden bridges, diverse tree species, and signboards with caution notices as the waterfalls have strong currents in certain areas.

After enjoying the first waterfall, I decided to continue trekking to the second waterfall, which is less crowded but equally stunning. The path becomes narrower and steeper, making it a more adventurous experience.

Trek Duration: 15-20 minutes to the first waterfall, another 20 minutes to the second

Follow signboards and avoid venturing into restricted areas
Avoid swimming in deep or restricted zones
Stick to designated trekking paths
Visit with a group if opting for the full trek

Best Time to Visit Thommankuthu Waterfalls

Thommankuthu is at its best during and after the monsoon season when the waterfalls are in full flow. My visit was in October, and the waterfalls were still strong and surrounded by lush greenery.

Exploring Abhayaranyam Kaprikkadu

1. Butterfly Garden – A Colorful Start

Our journey began with a walk through the Butterfly Garden. While I didn’t spot too many butterflies during my visit, the landscaped garden and peaceful surroundings made it a refreshing start. If you love butterflies, be sure to check out my Butterfly Park visit in Bannerghatta—I’ll add the link in the description!

2. Mini Zoo – Meeting Spotted & Sambar Deer

Next, we reached the Mini Zoo, where three main species can be seen—Spotted Deer, Sambar Deer, and Elephants. The deer park is a well-maintained enclosure, and watching these graceful animals roam freely in their natural habitat was a delightful experience.

3. Elephant Camp – Meeting the Gentle Giants

The highlight of our visit was the Elephant Camp, home to several rescued elephants with fascinating stories. Here are some of the elephants we met:

  • Hariprasad (50 years old): Rescued in 2012 from Poonkunnam railway station, known for his calm nature.
  • Parvathi (19 years old): Rescued as a calf after getting stuck in barbed wire during a flood.
  • Anjana (20 years old): Fell into a well when she was 1.5 years old and was brought here for rehabilitation.
  • Aasha (22 years old): Also rescued from a well near Kalady when she was just 2 years old.
  • Abhimanyu (51 years old): Shifted to this camp in 2023 due to a court order.
  • Sunitha (54 years old): Transferred from Muthanga in 1991 while pregnant; later gave birth to Sunny, a male elephant.
  • Peelandi Chandru (47 years old): Captured from Mannarkkad forest in 2017; he has a strong-willed personality and responds well to the name Chandru.

One of the most exciting parts of the visit was seeing the Periyar River, where the elephants are sometimes brought for bathing and relaxation.

A Thrilling Safari Experience at Bannerghatta National Park

A Thrilling Safari Experience at Bannerghatta National Park

Located just 22 kilometers from the bustling city of Bangalore, Karnataka, Bannerghatta National Park is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. Spanning over 260 square kilometers, this incredible park offers a unique blend of lush greenery, diverse flora, and exotic fauna. From the thrill of a safari ride to exploring the zoo and butterfly park, Bannerghatta has something for everyone.

Getting There and Tickets

We visited the park on a busy Saturday. To avoid long queues, we pre-booked a combo ticket online for ₹450 per person. This included access to the safari (₹400), the zoo, and the butterfly park (₹50). For the safari, we opted for a non-AC bus, but there’s also a jeep safari option available if you’re looking for a more private experience.

The Safari Adventure

The safari ride lasts around 30 minutes and takes you through various gated sections, each dedicated to specific animals. While the experience was exciting, it was a bit rushed due to the time constraints. If you’re visiting on a weekend, expect some waiting time before boarding the bus.

Here’s a glimpse of what we encountered during the safari:

  • Spotted Deer: The journey began with a sighting of these graceful creatures, their reddish-brown coats and white spots glistening under the sun. They moved effortlessly through the forest, providing a serene start to our adventure.

  • Sambar Deer: Next, we saw the majestic sambar deer, known for their large antlers and calm demeanor. They’re often spotted near water sources, grazing peacefully.

  • Elephants: Entering the elephant section was truly mesmerizing. These gentle giants moved gracefully, showcasing their sheer size and intelligence. Watching them in their natural habitat was an unforgettable experience.

  • Himalayan Black Bear: These playful creatures were a delight to watch. With their thick black fur and distinct white chest mark, they roamed around, climbing trees and foraging for food.

  • Leopards: The leopard section offered a rare glimpse of these elusive predators. Their sleek bodies and striking rosetted coats made them a highlight of the safari.

  • Lions: The “King of the Jungle” was seen lounging idly, occasionally glancing at the visitors. Their majestic presence was both intimidating and awe-inspiring.

  • Tigers: The safari concluded with sightings of both Bengal tigers and White tigers. The Bengal tiger’s vibrant orange coat and the White tiger’s rare and striking appearance left us in awe.

Feedback on the Safari

While the wildlife sightings were incredible, the hurried pace of the driver was a slight drawback. The rush to complete the trip within 30 minutes made it difficult to fully immerse ourselves in the experience. If you’re planning to visit, consider opting for the AC bus, which doesn’t have the obstructive iron grills of the non-AC buses, providing better views for photography and videos.

What’s Next?

In addition to the safari, Bannerghatta National Park has a zoo and a butterfly park, which we’ll cover in separate posts. Stay tuned for detailed explorations of these attractions!

Plan Your Visit

  • Location: 22 km from Bangalore, Karnataka.

  • Ticket Cost: Combo ticket for ₹450 (safari, zoo, and butterfly park).

  • Best Time to Visit: Weekdays are less crowded; mornings are ideal for better wildlife sightings.

  • Pro Tips: Book tickets online to save time, and consider the AC bus for an enhanced experience.

Final Thoughts

Bannerghatta National Park offers a memorable journey into the wild, making it an ideal getaway for families and wildlife enthusiasts. Despite the minor hiccups, it’s a must-visit destination for anyone looking to connect with nature and witness India’s incredible biodiversity up close

Unveiling Old Goa’s Spiritual Wonders: St. Augustine Tower, Chapel of the Weeping Cross & Museum of Christian Art

Old Goa, once the capital of Portuguese India, is home to some of the most fascinating and culturally significant heritage sites in Goa. Among these, the St. Augustine Tower, the Chapel of the Weeping Cross, and the Museum of Christian Art stand as powerful symbols of Goa’s colonial history and Christian heritage. Whether you’re a history buff or a culture enthusiast, these sites offer an immersive glimpse into Goa’s storied past.

St. Augustine Tower: A Haunting Reminder of Goa’s Colonial Past

The St. Augustine Tower is perhaps one of the most iconic and evocative landmarks in Old Goa. Standing at a height of 46 meters, this tower is the last surviving part of the St. Augustine Church, built by Augustinian friars in 1602. Once part of a grand church, the tower today stands as a haunting reminder of Goa’s colonial past and the grandeur that once was.

The church was abandoned in 1835 when the Portuguese government expelled many religious orders, and by 1871, the church's bell had been moved to the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in Panjim. The tower was severely damaged over time, and in 1931, a part of the tower collapsed, leaving only the remnants of this once-proud structure. The ruins are now a tranquil spot for visitors to reflect on the region’s colonial history and the passage of time.

Chapel of the Weeping Cross: The Miraculous Legend

Just a stone’s throw from the St. Augustine Tower lies the Chapel of the Weeping Cross, a site known for its miraculous past. In 1636, a crucifix inside the chapel was said to have wept, with tears flowing from the eyes of Christ on the cross. This miraculous event drew pilgrims from all over, and the chapel became an important spiritual site for the faithful.

Today, the chapel retains its peaceful and sacred atmosphere, with the Weeping Cross still the focal point of the chapel. Visitors can explore the intricately carved altar and the serene surroundings that continue to attract those seeking spiritual solace and divine blessings.

Museum of Christian Art: A Fusion of Cultures and Craftsmanship

The Museum of Christian Art is located within the Convent of Santa Monica in Old Goa and offers an extraordinary collection of religious art that beautifully showcases the convergence of Indian and European craftsmanship. This museum is dedicated to preserving the Christian artistic heritage of Goa, with exhibits that reflect the unique cultural fusion that took place during the Portuguese rule.

Here, visitors can admire intricately carved wooden altarpieces, silverware, paintings, and liturgical objects—many of which combine traditional Goan techniques with European influences. Established in the Seminary of Rachol, the museum aims to protect and restore these historic works of art, offering a deeper understanding of Goa’s religious and cultural history.

The museum’s top floor provides a stunning view of the altar of the Chapel of the Weeping Cross, making it a great place to reflect on the intersection of faith, art, and history.

A Journey Through Old Goa’s History

A visit to St. Augustine Tower, the Chapel of the Weeping Cross, and the Museum of Christian Art offers a chance to explore the deep historical and spiritual roots of Old Goa. Each site tells its own unique story, from the grandeur of colonial architecture to the miraculous tales of divine intervention. Whether you’re seeking a deeper connection with history or simply appreciating the beauty of these sacred landmarks, these sites are not to be missed.
