Chettinad, situated approximately 90 kilometers from Madurai and 150 kilometers from Tanjore, is a region in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. It encompasses a cluster of over 80 villages, with its principal town being Karaikudi, often regarded as its "capital."

The villages of Chettinad were inhabited by the Natukottai Chettiars, affluent merchants who engaged in trade both within India and abroad. It is estimated that around 11,000 Chettinad mansions still exist today, accounting for approximately half the number that stood a century ago. Connecting Lands, Bridging Stories: Exploring Rameshwaram's Pamban Bridge, Islands, and Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge

The Pamban Bridge is a significant railway bridge that links Mandapam on the mainland of India with Rameswaram on Pamban Island. It was inaugurated on 24th February 1914 and held the distinction of being India's first sea bridge. For many years, it was also the longest sea bridge in the country until the Bandra-Worli Sea Link was opened in 2010.

The bridge consists mostly of a conventional structure supported by concrete piers. However, it also features a unique double-leaf bascule section in the middle. This section can be raised to create an opening, allowing ships and barges to pass through. Prior to 1988, the Pamban Bridge was the sole means of surface transport connecting the island of Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu to the mainland.

To gain a more comprehensive understanding of the Pamban Bridge, I suggest watching the provided video. It will provide you with further insights and details about this remarkable engineering feat.
