Discover Kattikayam Waterfalls: A Hidden Gem Near Illikkal Kallu

When it comes to breathtaking natural beauty and serene landscapes, Kerala never disappoints. One of its hidden gems, Kattikayam Waterfalls, is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Tucked away near the famous Illikkal Kallu, this waterfall offers a perfect escape into the lap of nature.

How to Reach Kattikayam Waterfalls

Kattikayam Waterfalls is located near Moonnilavu on the way to Illikkal Kallu. To get there, you’ll come across Kattikayam Junction, also known as Thottumukku Junction. From here, take a deviation from the main road and follow the narrow path for about 800 meters to reach the paid parking area.

  • Parking Fees: ₹20 for cars, ₹10 for bikes

  • Facilities: There’s a small shop in the parking area where you can buy snacks and drinks.

The Trek to Kattikayam Waterfalls

The trek to the falls takes around 15 minutes and is filled with scenic beauty, lush greenery, and the soothing sound of flowing water. Though the path is mostly paved, be cautious as it’s quite old and lacks proper maintenance. Earlier, handrails lined the route, but now only a few poles remain.

Since the waterfall is most magnificent during monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, my visit in October rewarded me with a stunning view of cascading water. The weather had been rainy recently, making the trail a bit slippery, so wearing good trekking shoes is essential.

The Beauty of Kattikayam Waterfalls

As you approach the falls, the sound of rushing water becomes more intense, and the sight of the waterfall leaves you spellbound. The water tumbles down rocky terrain, forming a picturesque natural pool below.

  • Swimming Spot: The pool at the base of the falls is mesmerizing, but it’s important to be cautious while swimming as there are submerged rocks. There are no lifeguards, so swim at your own risk.

  • Hidden Cascade: Just below the main waterfall, there’s another cascade that can be seen from above. Unfortunately, there is no safe way to reach the bottom, so it’s best to admire it from the top.

Scenic Views and Nearby Attractions

While approaching Kattikayam from Melukavu, you can enjoy a distant view of the waterfall—a perfect spot to take some photos! The journey from Marmala Falls to Kattikayam Falls also offers mesmerizing views of Illikkal Kallu in the distance.

If you are planning a day trip, consider visiting nearby attractions:

  • Illikkal Kallu: Famous for its unique rock formation and panoramic views.

  • Marmala Aruvi Waterfalls: Another hidden gem nearby.

  • Eliyattupara Waterfalls: A serene spot to unwind.

Tips for Visiting Kattikayam Waterfalls

  • Best Time to Visit: Monsoon and post-monsoon (July to October)

  • What to Carry:

    • Comfortable trekking shoes

    • Snacks and water

    • Camera and waterproof cover

    • Basic first aid kit

  • Safety Precautions:

    • Be cautious while trekking, especially during rains.

    • Avoid swimming in deep areas due to submerged rocks.

    • No lifeguards are available, so stay safe and vigilant.

Final Thoughts

Kattikayam Waterfalls is truly a hidden paradise, offering an unforgettable experience for those willing to take the trek. The journey might be a bit challenging, but the reward at the end is worth every step. Whether you’re looking for an adventurous day out or just a peaceful escape into nature, this waterfall should definitely be on your list.

The Trek to Anayadikuthu Waterfalls

To reach the waterfall, you need to do a short trek through a forested path. There are two routes to reach the falls:

Along the way, you will find a few small shops and even changing rooms for those who want to take a dip in the cool waters.

The Legend Behind the Name

Anayadikuthu Waterfalls is also known as Anachadikuth Waterfalls, and its name is linked to two local legends:

  • It is believed that elephants used to come here to drink water above the falls.
  • Another legend states that two elephants once fought at the top of the waterfall, and one fell down to its death—giving the falls its name, which translates to "elephant fall."

Thommankuthu Waterfalls – A Hidden Gem in Kerala’s Wilderness

Nestled in the lush greenery of Idukki district, Kerala, Thommankuthu Waterfalls is a mesmerizing destination known for its seven-step cascading falls. Located 20 km from Thodupuzha, this scenic waterfall is part of the Kaliyar River and offers an amazing blend of trekking, adventure, and nature exploration.

On my recent visit to Thommankuthu, I had the chance to explore the first two waterfalls and learn about the trekking options available. Join me as I take you through this adventure!

Reaching Thommankuthu Waterfalls

Thommankuthu is well-connected by road, and the nearest town, Thodupuzha, serves as the best base point. From Thodupuzha, you can hire a taxi, auto-rickshaw, or take a bus to the entrance of the waterfalls.

๐Ÿ“ Location: Thommankuthu, Idukki, Kerala
Distance from Thodupuzha: 20 km
๐Ÿš— Best way to reach: Private vehicle, taxi, or bus

Entry Fee & Trekking Options

Upon reaching the entrance, you’ll need to purchase an entry ticket for ₹40 per person. From here, a short trek takes you to the first waterfall, while those interested in a deeper exploration can opt for guided trekking tours.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Entry Fee: ₹40 per person
๐Ÿฅพ Trekking Options:

  • Basic Trek: 400m to the first and second waterfalls
  • Half-Day Trek: ₹1,000 for a group of 5 people
  • Full-Day Trek: ₹1,500 for a group of 5 people (7 km trek)

Only the first two waterfalls are accessible with the standard entry ticket, while the longer trek requires a guide.

Trekking to the First & Second Waterfalls

The first waterfall is about 400m from the entrance, and the trek is relatively easy, with well-defined paths. Along the way, you’ll pass wooden bridges, diverse tree species, and signboards with caution notices as the waterfalls have strong currents in certain areas.

After enjoying the first waterfall, I decided to continue trekking to the second waterfall, which is less crowded but equally stunning. The path becomes narrower and steeper, making it a more adventurous experience.

Trek Duration: 15-20 minutes to the first waterfall, another 20 minutes to the second
๐ŸŒณ Scenery: Forest trails, flowing river, wooden bridges, lush greenery

Wildlife & Safety Measures

Since Thommankuthu is located in a forest area, it is not uncommon for elephants to visit the river to drink water. However, there are wildlife watchers stationed at specific points, ensuring visitors' safety.

⚠️ Safety Tips:
Follow signboards and avoid venturing into restricted areas
Avoid swimming in deep or restricted zones
Stick to designated trekking paths
Visit with a group if opting for the full trek

Best Time to Visit Thommankuthu Waterfalls

Thommankuthu is at its best during and after the monsoon season when the waterfalls are in full flow. My visit was in October, and the waterfalls were still strong and surrounded by lush greenery.

๐ŸŒง️ Monsoon (June – September): Best time for powerful waterfalls but be cautious of slippery trails
๐Ÿƒ Post-Monsoon (October – February): Ideal for trekking & scenic beauty
☀️ Summer (March – May): Water flow reduces, but trekking is still enjoyable
