Exploring Thooval Waterfalls – A Hidden Gem in Idukki, Kerala

Nestled deep within the serene landscapes of Idukki district lies Thooval Waterfalls, one of Kerala’s least explored and most refreshing natural wonders. Surrounded by spice plantations, rocky terrain, and lush greenery, this picturesque waterfall offers a peaceful escape for anyone looking to connect with nature.

🛤️ Reaching the Waterfall

To reach Thooval Waterfalls, visitors must take a short walk from the main road. The path is unpaved and runs along the side of spice plantations, giving the journey a rustic charm. The fresh aroma of cardamom and pepper plantations combined with the calm surroundings makes the approach just as enjoyable as the destination itself.

The waterfall is located close to the towns of Irattayar, Thopramkudy, and Nedumkandam, making it easily accessible for travelers exploring the interior regions of Idukki.

💧 Views From the Top and Bottom

One of the highlights of Thooval Waterfalls is that it can be enjoyed from both the top and the bottom.

Top Viewpoint

At the top, well-constructed bridges allow visitors to get a close, safe view of the water as it cascades down the rocks. From here, you can clearly see the gentle flow of water sliding over the rocky layers, accompanied by the soothing sound of nature. The view is peaceful, refreshing, and perfect for photography.

Bottom Viewpoint

There is also a trail that leads to the bottom of the waterfall, offering a completely different perspective. Visitors can enjoy the sight of the water splashing into natural pools and appreciate the full height of the falls. Although I didn’t take this route during my visit, the aerial views captured from above fully revealed the beauty and spread of the waterfall.

🍃 Best Time to Visit

The water flow at Thooval Waterfalls is at its best during and right after the monsoon season. A visit between June and September offers the most scenic experience.
My visit was in September, just after the monsoon, when the waterfall looked vibrant and full of energy without being too heavy.

 Nestled in the lush greenery of Idukki district, Kerala, Thommankuthu Waterfalls is a mesmerizing destination known for its seven-step cascading falls. Located 20 km from Thodupuzha, this scenic waterfall is part of the Kaliyar River and offers an amazing blend of trekking, adventure, and nature exploration.

Thommankuthu is well-connected by road, and the nearest town, Thodupuzha, serves as the best base point. From Thodupuzha, you can hire a taxi, auto-rickshaw, or take a bus to the entrance of the waterfalls.

Upon reaching the entrance, you’ll need to purchase an entry ticket for ₹40 per person. From here, a short trek takes you to the first waterfall, while those interested in a deeper exploration can opt for guided trekking tours.

• Basic Trek: 400m to the first and second waterfalls
• Half-Day Trek: ₹1,000 for a group of 5 people
• Full-Day Trek: ₹1,500 for a group of 5 people (7 km trek)

Only the first two waterfalls are accessible with the standard entry ticket, while the longer trek requires a guide.

Trekking to the First & Second Waterfalls

The first waterfall is about 400m from the entrance, and the trek is relatively easy, with well-defined paths. Along the way, you’ll pass wooden bridges, diverse tree species, and signboards with caution notices as the waterfalls have strong currents in certain areas.

After enjoying the first waterfall, I decided to continue trekking to the second waterfall, which is less crowded but equally stunning. The path becomes narrower and steeper, making it a more adventurous experience.

Nestled in the heart of Kerala’s Idukki District, the Kulamavu Dam and Uppukunnu Viewpoint offer a perfect blend of natural beauty, engineering marvel, and serene landscapes. If you’re planning a trip to this picturesque region, these hidden gems should be at the top of your itinerary.

Exploring Kulamavu Dam

Kulamavu Dam, part of the Idukki Hydroelectric Project, stands as a testament to modern engineering. It’s one of the three dams constructed along the Periyar River, alongside the Idukki and Cheruthoni Dams. What makes Kulamavu unique is that it’s the only one among the trio that allows vehicles to pass through, providing a scenic drive on the route from Thodupuzha to Kattapana.

The dam’s structure is impressive, with its gravity design featuring a concrete upper portion and a masonry lower portion. While the dam’s primary purpose is electricity generation, it’s also a beautiful spot to visit. Although photography on the dam is restricted, there are nearby viewpoints where you can capture the beauty of the reservoir and the surrounding lush greenery.

Reaching Uppukunnu Viewpoint

After exploring Kulamavu Dam, make your way to Uppukunnu Viewpoint, a lesser-known yet breathtaking spot. This viewpoint offers panoramic views of the Western Ghats, making it a paradise for nature lovers and photographers alike.

From Uppukunnu, you can see the distant Malankara Reservoir, the Nellickamala Viewpoint nestled in a small mountain below, and the majestic Elaveezha Poonjira, a spot we explored earlier. The viewpoint also provides a glimpse of the large factory, recognizable by its white appearance, which we discussed in our Nellickamala adventure.
