 Nestled in the lush greenery of Idukki district, Kerala, Thommankuthu Waterfalls is a mesmerizing destination known for its seven-step cascading falls. Located 20 km from Thodupuzha, this scenic waterfall is part of the Kaliyar River and offers an amazing blend of trekking, adventure, and nature exploration.

Thommankuthu is well-connected by road, and the nearest town, Thodupuzha, serves as the best base point. From Thodupuzha, you can hire a taxi, auto-rickshaw, or take a bus to the entrance of the waterfalls.

Upon reaching the entrance, you’ll need to purchase an entry ticket for ₹40 per person. From here, a short trek takes you to the first waterfall, while those interested in a deeper exploration can opt for guided trekking tours.

• Basic Trek: 400m to the first and second waterfalls
• Half-Day Trek: ₹1,000 for a group of 5 people

Only the first two waterfalls are accessible with the standard entry ticket, while the longer trek requires a guide.

Trekking to the First & Second Waterfalls

The first waterfall is about 400m from the entrance, and the trek is relatively easy, with well-defined paths. Along the way, you’ll pass wooden bridges, diverse tree species, and signboards with caution notices as the waterfalls have strong currents in certain areas.

After enjoying the first waterfall, I decided to continue trekking to the second waterfall, which is less crowded but equally stunning. The path becomes narrower and steeper, making it a more adventurous experience.

Since Thommankuthu is located in a forest area, it is not uncommon for elephants to visit the river to drink water. However, there are wildlife watchers stationed at specific points, ensuring visitors' safety.

Best Time to Visit Thommankuthu Waterfalls

Thommankuthu is at its best during and after the monsoon season when the waterfalls are in full flow. My visit was in October, and the waterfalls were still strong and surrounded by lush greenery.

The best time to visit Bhoothathankettu Dam is during the monsoon season (June to September) and the post-monsoon period (October to March). During these times, the water levels are higher, the surroundings are lush and green, and the weather is pleasant. The dam’s structure is impressive, with its gravity design featuring a concrete upper portion and a masonry lower portion. While the dam’s primary purpose is electricity generation, it’s also a beautiful spot to visit. Although photography on the dam is restricted, there are nearby viewpoints where you can capture the beauty of the reservoir and the surrounding lush greenery.

Reaching Uppukunnu Viewpoint

After exploring Kulamavu Dam, make your way to Uppukunnu Viewpoint, a lesser-known yet breathtaking spot. This viewpoint offers panoramic views of the Western Ghats, making it a paradise for nature lovers and photographers alike.

From Uppukunnu, you can see the distant Malankara Reservoir, the Nellickamala Viewpoint nestled in a small mountain below, and the majestic Elaveezha Poonjira, a spot we explored earlier. The viewpoint also provides a glimpse of the large factory, recognizable by its white appearance, which we discussed in our Nellickamala adventure.

 Nestled in the lush green hills of Idukki, Kerala, the Anchuruli Tunnel is an engineering marvel that blends seamlessly with the natural beauty of the region. Managed by the Kerala State Electricity Board, the tunnel plays a crucial role in the Idukki Hydro Electric Project, which powers a significant portion of the state.

Getting There: Located about 8 kilometers from Kattappana town in Idukki district, the journey to Anchuruli Tunnel is an adventure in itself. The road leading to the tunnel can be rough, especially during the monsoon season, but it is commutable with a bit of caution. The drive takes you through winding roads, dense forests, and picturesque landscapes, offering plenty of opportunities to soak in the natural beauty of Idukki.

The Journey Begins

Our adventure to Ilaveezhapoonchira started by afternoon via Melukavu village in Kottayam district. The drive itself was an experience, with each turn presenting a new vista of Kerala's famed landscapes. 

The Muniyara Caves

One of the highlights of this journey was stopping at the Muniyara Caves. These ancient caves, used by tribal people as tombs or meditation spots, hold stories of a bygone era. Walking through the water inside the cave, feeling the chill of history on my skin, was a moment of awe. The trek through these caves is not just a physical journey but a passage through time, offering a glimpse into the lives of people who walked these lands centuries ago.

Ascending Ilaveezhapoonchira

The climb up to Ilaveezhapoonchira was both challenging and rewarding. With every step, the panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys became more spectacular. Ilaveezhapoonchira, meaning 'the pond of flowers where leaves do not fall,' is a plateau at the top of the hills, devoid of trees, offering uninterrupted views of the sky and land.

The Enchanting Views

Reaching the top was a moment of triumph. The plateau offers a 360-degree view of the Western Ghats, and on a clear day, you can even see parts of Idukki, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Pathanamthitta districts. The tranquility of the place, coupled with the gentle breeze, was a perfect reward for the trek.

Sitting atop Ilaveezhapoonchira, surrounded by the majesty of nature, I reflected on the journey. The trek was not just about reaching the destination but appreciating the beauty and history along the way. The Muniyara Caves, the challenging paths, and the breathtaking views all contributed to an unforgettable experience.
