Our Abu Dhabi journey continued with a visit to one of the city’s most iconic landmarks — Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. This visit was part of our one-day Abu Dhabi tour, with the entrance tickets arranged by our tour driver.
Before heading to the mosque, we spent some time exploring Souq Al Jami. From there, we walked towards the mosque. Along the walkway, we could see photographs and information panels introducing visitors to the mosque, its architecture, and some of its remarkable features.
As we approached, the magnificent white marble structure gradually came into view. By the time we reached the mosque, the evening light had transformed the entire surroundings. The combination of the white marble, enormous domes, beautiful courtyard, and reflective pools created a spectacular view.
The mosque features 82 white marble domes and more than 1,000 columns. The columns are beautifully decorated with intricate floral patterns and inlaid with stones including amethyst and jasper. The immense courtyard, with its detailed marble designs, adds another layer of beauty to the architecture.
One of the highlights of the visit was the Eastern Foyer, where we could appreciate the mosque’s intricate architectural details up close. The surrounding pools also create stunning reflections of the white marble structure, particularly during sunset and as the mosque begins to illuminate in the evening.
Inside the mosque, visitors can see one of the world’s largest hand-knotted carpets, along with enormous Swarovski crystal chandeliers. These remarkable features showcase the extraordinary craftsmanship found throughout the complex.
What makes the experience especially memorable is seeing the mosque during the evening. The changing light, illuminated architecture, reflective pools, domes, columns, and intricate details come together to create an unforgettable atmosphere.

During our one-day Abu Dhabi sightseeing trip from Dubai, we visited Qasr Al Watan, one of the most impressive landmarks in the UAE. Also known as the Palace of the Nation, Qasr Al Watan offers visitors an opportunity to experience the country’s architecture, culture, heritage, knowledge, and traditions.
Our visit began at the Visitors Centre, where our driver-cum-guide provided us with the tickets. Since we visited on a Saturday, the area was quite crowded. After completing the security checks, we waited for the shuttle bus that takes visitors from the Visitors Centre to the palace.
The bus ride itself gives us a wonderful introduction to Qasr Al Watan. As we approach the palace, the magnificent white architecture gradually comes into view, with its enormous arches, domes, intricate geometric patterns, and traditional Arabian design.
The Grand Courtyard
One of the first areas we explored was the magnificent courtyard. The vast open space is beautifully finished with marble and features impressive water fountains and architectural details.
The courtyard also provides excellent views of the palace facade. The combination of the white marble, water features, enormous structure, and clear open spaces creates an impressive setting and makes this area a great place for photography.
The Great Hall
Inside the palace, one of the major highlights is the Great Hall. The enormous space features massive arches, intricate geometric designs, beautiful chandeliers, and a spectacular central dome.
The scale of the hall is difficult to appreciate until you are standing inside it. The detailed decorations and traditional architectural elements demonstrate the extraordinary level of craftsmanship throughout the palace.
Exploring the Palace
There are several interesting sections to explore inside Qasr Al Watan.
The Prayer Room reflects the importance of Islamic traditions and spirituality, while the Presidential Gifts exhibition showcases gifts exchanged between the UAE and other countries, offering an interesting glimpse into the country's diplomatic relationships.
We also visited The Presidential Banquet, an impressive area showcasing the grandeur associated with official state occasions and diplomatic gatherings.
Another section, The Spirit of Collaboration, highlights the importance of cooperation and partnership within the UAE's governing institutions.
Qasr Al Watan Library
The Qasr Al Watan Library is another fascinating part of the palace. It is dedicated to knowledge and learning and reflects the intellectual and cultural heritage of the UAE and the wider Arab world.
The library provides an opportunity to discover the importance of books, knowledge, and scholarship in the region.
House of Knowledge
At the House of Knowledge, visitors can discover works and objects connected with Arab and Islamic civilization.
The exhibits highlight contributions to areas such as science, literature, medicine, astronomy, and the arts, providing another perspective on the region's rich intellectual heritage.

Beyond the exhibitions and individual rooms, the architecture itself is one of the biggest attractions at Qasr Al Watan.

Outside, visitors can also enjoy views of Abu Dhabi's skyline and waterfront, creating a beautiful contrast between the traditional-inspired palace and the modern city surrounding it.

For visitors coming in the evening, Palace in Motion offers another memorable experience. The palace facade becomes a giant screen for a spectacular light and sound presentation, using projections and music to tell the story of the UAE.
It is a beautiful way to experience Qasr Al Watan after sunset.

The Etihad Towers stand prominently along the waterfront and have become one of the defining features of Abu Dhabi's modern skyline.

Continuing along the Corniche, we pass the magnificent Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental. Its grand Arabian-inspired architecture, domes, gardens, and waterfront setting make it one of Abu Dhabi's most recognisable landmarks.
Nearby, we can also see the impressive ADNOC Headquarters and Qasr Al Watan, the Palace of the Nation. Qasr Al Watan is a remarkable architectural landmark showcasing the UAE's heritage, culture, and knowledge.
Our drive continues past Bab Al Qasr Hotel and the Khalidiya Twin Towers, giving us more opportunities to admire Abu Dhabi's striking combination of modern buildings and traditional architectural influences.
Abu Dhabi's Impressive Architecture
One of the highlights of the drive is Capital Gate, famously known as the Leaning Tower of Abu Dhabi. Its unusual design makes it one of the city's most distinctive buildings.
We then continue towards the magnificent Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. With its white marble architecture, elegant domes, beautiful courtyards, and intricate details, the mosque is undoubtedly one of Abu Dhabi's most spectacular landmarks.
Further along our route, we also pass the distinctive Aldar Headquarters, a remarkable circular building that has become another recognisable feature of Abu Dhabi's architectural landscape.
Our journey eventually takes us towards Al Bahyah, where we see Al Bahyah Mosque.
