Exploring Yercaud: A Serene Hill Station in Tamil Nadu

Nestled in the lush Eastern Ghats, Yercaud is a peaceful hill station that offers a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Known as the Jewel of the Shevaroys, this charming town is famous for its cool climate, scenic viewpoints, sprawling coffee and pepper plantations, and beautiful lakes.

Our journey in Yercaud began at the heart of the hill station — Yercaud Lake, also called Emerald Lake. Surrounded by greenery and gentle hills, the lake offers a calm and refreshing atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy a boat ride, take a leisurely walk along its banks, or simply relax and soak in the serene environment.

Next, we explored the town’s parks. Eri Park and Anna Park offer peaceful walking trails, manicured gardens, and play areas for children. The Yercaud Eco Park, located near the Boat House, provides stunning views of the lake along with watchtowers and a children’s play area.

Yercaud is also famous for its viewpoints. Lady’s Seat, Gent’s Seat, and Children’s Seat offer panoramic views of the valleys, winding ghat roads, and distant Salem city. The Pagoda View Point and Karadiyur View Point provide serene spots to admire the hills and forests, while Melur Village View Point shows the quiet countryside in all its beauty.

For nature lovers, Yercaud has Kiliyur Falls and Nallur Waterfalls. Kiliyur Falls is a majestic cascade, though during my visit in September, the water flow was relatively low. Nallur Waterfalls, on the other hand, is a hidden gem — peaceful, less-crowded, and surrounded by lush greenery, accessible via a short 5-minute walk along a mud path.

The hill station is also dotted with historical and cultural landmarks, including Montfort School, Holy Trinity Church, and quaint colonial-era spots that add charm to the region.

A stroll through Yercaud is incomplete without visiting its coffee and pepper plantations. The aromatic plantations stretch across the hills, and some estates, like Cauvery Peak, allow visitors to learn about coffee cultivation and even enjoy freshly brewed coffee amidst stunning scenery.

As our trip came to an end, we enjoyed the valley views on the way back, reflecting on the natural beauty and tranquility of Yercaud. Whether you’re seeking adventure, scenic views, or peaceful relaxation, this hill station offers something for every traveler.

Yercaud is a place where nature, heritage, and serenity come together, making it an unforgettable destination for anyone looking to escape into the hills.
