Our journey to Hemkund Sahib begins from the mountain town of Joshimath, a well-known base for many Himalayan pilgrimages and treks.
From Joshimath to Govindghat
The road journey from Joshimath to Govindghat is relatively short but incredibly scenic. The winding mountain road follows the course of the Alaknanda River, with dramatic views of deep valleys and towering mountains.
Govindghat serves as the main gateway for two popular Himalayan journeys — the pilgrimage to Hemkund Sahib and the trek to Valley of Flowers National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its vibrant alpine flowers.
Pilgrims, trekkers, and travelers gather here to begin their adventure into the high Himalayas.
Govindghat to Pulna – The Starting Point of the Trek
From Govindghat, the journey continues to the small mountain village of Pulna. This short stretch can be covered by local shared jeeps or taxis.
Pulna marks the starting point of the trekking route, where the road ends and the mountain trail begins.
The path gradually climbs through dense forests, alongside rushing streams and waterfalls, offering stunning views at every turn.
Trekking from Pulna to Ghangaria
The trek from Pulna to Ghangaria is approximately 9–10 kilometers and follows a well-marked mountain trail.
As you move deeper into the mountains, the landscape becomes more dramatic. Wooden bridges cross roaring streams, misty forests surround the trail, and the sound of waterfalls echoes through the valley.
Despite the steady uphill climb, the beauty of the surroundings makes the journey enjoyable and memorable.
Ghangaria is a small yet vibrant village that serves as the base camp for both Hemkund Sahib and the Valley of Flowers. Most travelers spend the night here to acclimatize before attempting the steep climb to Hemkund Sahib.
The Challenging Trek from Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib
The final stretch from Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib is about 6 kilometers, but it is significantly steeper and more demanding.
The trail climbs rapidly through rocky terrain, with breathtaking views of snow-covered mountains and alpine meadows along the way. Due to the high altitude, the air becomes thinner, making the climb physically challenging.
However, the determination of pilgrims and the spiritual significance of the destination keep everyone moving forward.
Ponies and palanquins are also available for those who need assistance during the climb.
Arrival at the Sacred Hemkund Sahib
After the strenuous ascent, the first glimpse of Hemkund Sahib is truly magical.
The Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara, with its unique star-shaped architecture, stands beside a crystal-clear glacial lake surrounded by seven majestic mountain peaks. The peaceful environment, combined with the cold mountain air and the sound of prayers, creates an incredibly spiritual atmosphere.
Pilgrims often take a dip in the icy waters of the lake before entering the Gurudwara, believing it to be spiritually purifying.
The Gurudwara also offers Langar (community meals) to visitors, continuing the Sikh tradition of serving food to all.
