Nestled between Mattancherry Palace and the Paradesi Synagogue, Jew Town is a charming stretch filled with antique shops, spice markets, and colonial architecture. Around 3:30 PM, I wrapped up my Jew Town walk and took an auto to the Fort Kochi Water Metro Terminal. I bought a ticket to the High Court Terminal, which cost just ₹40. The 20-minute ride was peaceful and scenic, offering beautiful views of the Chinese Fishing Nets—an iconic image of Fort Kochi.

🛥 Starting the Journey from Fort Kochi

Our journey begins at the Fort Kochi Water Metro terminal. This isn’t just a scenic ride — it’s a glimpse into Kochi’s future of sustainable travel. After purchasing our tickets (₹40 per person one way), we walked a short distance to the boarding area. The boat was already docked and waiting.

These boats are fully electric, air-conditioned, and designed for comfort. Though the boat was packed and I didn’t get a seat initially, the ride was still smooth and relaxing thanks to the cool interior.

🌊 Cruising Through Vembanad Lake

As we moved through the waters, the beauty of Vembanad Lake unfolded around us. We passed by several Chinese fishing nets, locally known as Cheena Vala, and saw various vessels along the way — fishing boats, jankars, passenger boats, and even large ships heading toward the Vallarpadam Container Terminal.

One of the highlights was passing under the Goshree Bridges, which connect Kochi’s islands to the mainland. These bridges have made daily commuting easier for thousands of locals.

🏢 Arrival at High Court Terminal

Soon, we reached the High Court Water Metro Terminal, which is also a charging hub for the boats. This terminal is busier than Fort Kochi, offering connections to multiple locations across Kochi.

After stepping out, we bought return tickets (again ₹40) for our ride back. The area was crowded in the evening, and we had to wait for about 30 minutes to catch the third boat. This time, I managed to find a seat and enjoy the journey more comfortably.

🌅 Sunset Views and Scenic Ride Back

As the sun began to set, the views became even more magical. The orange hues reflected on the water, and we saw more catamaran-style boats, just like the one we were on. These boats can carry up to 100 passengers, which explains the wait time during rush hours — but with ample seating at the terminal, it wasn't a problem.

Kumarakom Houseboat Day Cruise & Pathiramanal Island: A Perfect Family Getaway

When it comes to planning a family get-together, finding the right experience that blends relaxation, fun, and nature is key. After considering many options, we finally decided to spend the day cruising the serene backwaters of Kumarakom on a houseboat—and it turned out to be one of the most memorable outings we’ve had!

Starting the Journey

We had booked a 2-bedroom houseboat with attached bathrooms, a spacious main hall, and an upper deck offering panoramic views. Though the cruise was scheduled from 11 AM to 5 PM, we reached the boarding point around 11:15 AM. Thankfully, the crew kindly extended our return time to 5:30 PM.

We were welcomed on board with a refreshing welcome drink, and soon we were off, gently reversing into the vast Vembanad Lake. The starting point was a calm bay area where many other boats were parked, and we were surrounded by the beauty of nature and the sound of birdsong—this region is part of the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary.

Cruising Through Nature

As the boat moved through the lake, we came across occasional patches of green algae, which the crew skillfully navigated. On the right side, we spotted the charming Coconut Lagoon Resort, nestled amidst lush greenery.

The calm waters, fluttering birds like Little Cormorants, and the gentle sway of the boat created the perfect atmosphere for everyone to relax. While some soaked in the views, others began playing ball games and indoor activities, turning the boat into a floating party space!

Lunch with Kerala Flavors

By noon, we anchored the boat at a safe spot for lunch. The meal was a delicious spread of traditional Kerala dishes including chicken curry and the iconic Karimeen (Pearl Spot) fry. The flavors were rich and authentic—truly a highlight of the trip!

Exploring Pathiramanal Island

After meals we found the Jetty in Pathiramanal is free, so we made a stop to explore the island. Entry costs ₹20 per person, and the place is a nature lover’s delight.

We took a peaceful walk through the greenery, listening to the sounds of birds and rustling leaves. The island is known to attract migratory birds during the winter months. We even spotted a monitor lizard along the path and explored a small treehouse and a children’s play area—a fun surprise!

Evening Vibes & Games Onboard

Although we had initially considered visiting the Thanneermukkam Bund, time was running out. So instead, we made the most of the remaining hours with lively indoor games like Dumb Charades and Antakshari. The boat was filled with laughter and music, making these memories just as special as the scenery around us.

Tea, Snacks & Farewell

Around 5 PM, we were served a light evening snack of banana fritters and tea. As the boat gently cruised back toward the drop-off point, we reflected on what a beautiful day it had been—filled with bonding, nature, fun, and fantastic food.

Reaching Suryanelli: Journey Through Scenic GAP Road

After spending some time exploring Munnar, we traveled through the stunning GAP Road, known for its breathtaking views of valleys and mountains. From GAP Road, we took a deviation toward Suryanelli, the place where our camping adventure was about to begin.

I had booked my tent through Exoticamp at a campsite managed by Crypto Adventure. I had a great experience camping with them previously, so it was an easy decision.
The cost was ₹2200, which included the tent stay, evening tea, dinner, breakfast, and the Kolukkumalai Jeep Safari!

Though it was just a 10 km drive from GAP Road to the campsite, it took around 25 minutes due to rough patches along the way. I arrived at around 4:00 PM, checked into my cozy tent perched at the top of the campsite amidst a cardamom plantation, offering fantastic views all around.

Evening Trek and Campfire Experience

After a short rest and a refreshing cup of tea, we headed for an evening trek to a nearby viewpoint. The mist had rolled in after an earlier rain, creating a dreamy atmosphere. Although we missed the sunset, the short 10-minute walk was absolutely worth it for the views.

From the viewpoint, you can see other campsites, thick forests, and sprawling plantations stretching far into the horizon. As fog started to envelope the area, we returned to the campsite by 6 PM.

Later, the campfire was lit, with music adding to the vibe. Dinner was served around 9 PM, and after spending some relaxing moments by the fire, I retired to my tent to rest for the exciting morning ahead.

Early Morning Jeep Safari to Kolukkumalai

We woke up by 4 AM, and by 4:45, the jeep arrived to pick us up for the safari.
The jeep safari cost is ₹2400 plus a ₹600 entry fee — but it was already included in my camping package.

By 5:05 AM, we reached the safari starting point. After paying the entry fee, our uphill journey through Kolukkumalai’s tea estates began.
Even early on a Friday morning, the route was bustling with hundreds of jeeps, all aiming for the spectacular sunrise! The 11 km off-road journey took about an hour due to the traffic and rough roads.

The Breathtaking Kolukkumalai Sunrise

Kolukkumalai sits at about 7,900 feet (2,160 meters), perched on the border of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Standing atop the ridge, the sunrise view comes from Tamil Nadu’s side, while we stood in Kerala!

Though we arrived slightly after sunrise, the views were still mesmerizing — the valleys bathed in soft golden light, mist floating over tea estates, and the majestic Western Ghats all around.

One of the highlights here is spotting Bose Peak, the highest point in Kolukkumalai at 2,170 meters. Trekking to Bose Peak takes about two hours for a round trip and requires an additional ₹200 ticket. Since I came with the group by jeep, I skipped the trek this time.

From the viewpoints, you can also spot the Anayirankal Dam reservoir in the distance on a clear day!

Wrapping Up the Adventure

By 7:30 AM, we headed back to the jeep pick-up point and started our downhill journey. With the morning sun now lighting up the scenery, the ride back was even more beautiful.
We reached the campsite by 8:15 AM, enjoyed a hearty breakfast, packed up, and continued exploring Munnar.

Camping at Suryanelli and the Kolukkumalai sunrise trek was an amazing experience filled with nature, adventure, and scenic beauty.

Nadukani Pavilion Idukki – Stunning Views

 Tucked away in the serene hills of Kerala's Idukki district lies a hidden gem – Nadukani Pavilion. Perched at an altitude of 3000 feet above sea level, this hilltop viewpoint offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views in the Western Ghats. Our visit here turned into a peaceful evening adventure, complete with golden light, misty mountains, and a valley lit up like a painting. Let me take you through this beautiful journey.

📍 Where is Nadukani Pavilion?

Nadukani is located between Thodupuzha and Idukki, right along the Thodupuzha–Puliyanmala Highway. After crossing Asoka Junction, we climbed up 12 exciting hairpin bends to reach this scenic spot, nestled close to Kulamavu. This makes it a perfect detour if you're exploring Idukki’s many hill stations or on a route to nearby dams and viewpoints.

As soon as you reach Nadukani Pavilion, you're greeted with a sweeping view of:

• Moolamattom town

• Malankara Reservoir

• The river flowing from the Moolamattom hydroelectric power station

• Rolling green hills, with Ilaveezhapoonchira right in front

A two-storeyed stone structure built in 1966 by Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) serves as a viewing platform. It was originally built as part of the Idukki Hydroelectric Project and is now a peaceful getaway for locals and travelers alike.

We even caught a glimpse of the Greenberg Resort, made famous by the Malayalam movie 12th Man. If you're planning a trip to that resort, Nadukani Pavilion is a must-stop en route.

If you’re looking for an offbeat and refreshing escape in Kerala, Kachaaram Waterfalls, also known as Kanthalloor Waterfalls, is the perfect hidden gem waiting to be explored. Tucked away in the peaceful village of Kanthalloor, located in the Idukki district, this scenic waterfall offers a tranquil retreat surrounded by lush greenery and cool mountain air.

A Peaceful Morning in Kanthalloor

We spent the night in Kanthalloor, a serene village known for its fruit orchards, vegetable farms, and cool climate. Often called the “Fruit Village of Kerala,” Kanthalloor is famous for growing apples, plums, peaches, and more—fruits that are rarely found in other parts of the state.

The next morning, we decided to head towards Kachaaram Waterfalls, which is situated on the road leading to Marayoor. The route itself is scenic, offering beautiful views of the rolling hills and mist-covered landscapes.

Trekking to the Waterfalls

After parking our car, we started walking towards the waterfall. There is a viewpoint on the way from where you can hear the soothing sound of water and even catch a glimpse of the falls from a distance. The trek to the base of the waterfall is around 500 meters and took about 15 minutes to complete. The path is unpaved but manageable for most visitors.

For those who prefer not to walk, trip jeeps are available and can take you closer to the waterfall.

Nature’s Refreshing Retreat

The Kachaaram Waterfall drops from a height of around 20 meters, creating a natural pool below. It's an ideal spot to relax, dip your feet, and enjoy the untouched beauty of nature. There was no entry fee during our visit, making it a great budget-friendly experience.

While the best time to visit is during the monsoon season when the waterfall is at its fullest, even during our January visit (towards the beginning of summer), the water flow was still delightful and photogenic.

While exploring Kanthalloor, we also visited the Bhramaram View Point, which offers a distant yet spectacular view of the Kachaaram Waterfalls. We’ve also included a few stunning visuals from the Marayoor View Point, which is known for its panoramic landscapes and peaceful vibes.

When it comes to breathtaking natural beauty and serene landscapes, Kerala never disappoints. One of its hidden gems, Kattikayam Waterfalls, is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Tucked away near the famous Illikkal Kallu, this waterfall offers a perfect escape into the lap of nature.

How to Reach Kattikayam Waterfalls

Kattikayam Waterfalls is located near Moonnilavu on the way to Illikkal Kallu. To get there, you’ll come across Kattikayam Junction, also known as Thottumukku Junction. From here, take a deviation from the main road and follow the narrow path for about 800 meters to reach the paid parking area.

• Parking Fees: ₹20 for cars, ₹10 for bikes

• Facilities: There’s a small shop in the parking area where you can buy snacks and drinks.

The Trek to Kattikayam Waterfalls

The trek to the falls takes around 15 minutes and is filled with scenic beauty, lush greenery, and the soothing sound of flowing water. Though the path is mostly paved, be cautious as it’s quite old and lacks proper maintenance. Earlier, handrails lined the route, but now only a few poles remain.

Since the waterfall is most magnificent during monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, my visit in October rewarded me with a stunning view of cascading water. The weather had been rainy recently, making the trail a bit slippery, so wearing good trekking shoes is essential.

The Beauty of Kattikayam Waterfalls

As you approach the falls, the sound of rushing water becomes more intense, and the sight of the waterfall leaves you spellbound. The water tumbles down rocky terrain, forming a picturesque natural pool below.

• Swimming Spot: The pool at the base of the falls is mesmerizing, but it’s important to be cautious while swimming as there are submerged rocks. There are no lifeguards, so swim at your own risk.

• Hidden Cascade: Just below the main waterfall, there’s another cascade that can be seen from above. Unfortunately, there is no safe way to reach the bottom, so it’s best to admire it from the top.
